практический и собственно научный интересы к проблемам высшего образования и управления
университетами. В статье поставлены три ключевых вопроса: как появилась потребность во внутренних
университетских исследованиях, какие цели они преследуют и как должны быть организованы IR-
центры, чтобы функционировать наиболее эффективно. В поисках ответов на эти вопросы рассматрива-
ются история и предпосылки возникновения, цели и направления университетских исследований, современная
институциональная среда IR. Также приводятся конкретные примеры того, как результаты
внутренних вузовских исследований применяются на практике. Во второй части работы формулируются
условия, необходимые для эффективной работы университетских структур, занимающихся внутрен-
ними исследованиями.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>Institutional research (IR) serves as an example of a sphere where practical and scientific interests towards higher education issues and university management are combined. The article looks at three key questions:  how did the demand for university monitoring arise; what are the main objectives of institutional research and how should institutional research officers be organized in order to function in the most effective way. While looking for the answers, I examine the history and preconditions of IR and analyze modern institutional environment of university monitoring. Specific examples of practical application of IR results are also considered.
